Aao Zarooriyat ki Baat Kerain (Let's Talk About Essentials)

Promoting community access to information for women on legal rights

Uks in collaboration with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) produced a two-part series radio programmes of 15-minute duration that was aired live from FM Power 99 in Islamabad on December 3 - 4, 2006 and the recorded version was aired later from Abbottabad, Muzzafabad and Vehari.

This was a two-part series with an oral testimony, a feature and vox-pops (public voices). All the three segments focused on how women are kept in the dark regarding various clauses in the ‘nikahnama’ (marriage contract) that are actually in their favour. The programmes comprised investigative journalism and interviews of affected women with live discussion and phone-ins. Uks believes that mere legislation is not enough to bring about behavioural change in society’s perceptions of women. It has to be supplemented by a continued process of sensitization of the public for which media can be an effective agent.

The production team had in-house editorial meetings where the team and themes were finalized for this series.
