Uks launched a series of 16 radio programmes to show its solidarity with the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence Campaign 2016. In-line with the year’s theme "From Peace in the home to peace in the world: Make education safe or all!” the radio series focused on the issues in the national context. The 16 radio programmes focussed on a wide array of socio-economic barriers in girls’ access to their fundamental human right – education. Uks radio producers explored the various factors and gender unjust practices contributing to denial of education to girls including violent extremism, lack of awareness of basic and legal rights, illiteracy, forced marriages, lack of access to opportunities like mobility, economic stability, entrepreneurship etc.

A radio series on prevalence of gender based violence in South Punjab (Multan, Layyah & Muzaffargarh). The radio programmes are based on oral testimonies and on-location recording of survivors of VAW including forced marriages,violations of legal rights of women, domestic violence,lack of sexual and reproductive health facilities etc. The programmes designed through input from locals -both men and women –addressed issues highlighted by them and provided information on accessing legal help through local help centres set up by the government. The programmes advocated respect and equity for womenthrough inputs from local elders, religious scholars and officials. Broadcasted from Multan -FM 93, Muzaffargarh -FM93and Layyah -Solo FM 89.

An awareness-raising radio series on legal rights of women workers. The radio series brings to the fore the many faces of informal economy in the targeted area and the struggles and success of informal women workers. The series addressed the violation of rights of informal women workers who have no recognition and even lesser awareness on their rights. The themes included violation of women workers’ rights in informal sector, exploitation of home-based workers by middlemen, minimum wage policy and its implementation, health and safety of women workers, lack of opportunities and access to market – informal workers, status of Provincial policies on home-based workers, labour rights violations - brick kiln workers (Bhatta Mazdoor), factory workers, domestic workers, lady health workers, lack of research and data on informal sector workers and occupational groups in Islamabad/Rawalpindi. The programmes also raised voice against the institutionalisation of violation of rights of women workers by pending ratifications of ILO Conventions on Labour Laws. The series was broadcasted from FM 101 network.

This series brought forward stories from remote areas of Sindh, Pakistan and the impact of energy crises on home-based workers, small-business owners, transporters and general public.This series was produced to serve as an example for the media practitioners to build awareness about energy shortageand to contribute to the development of a wider body of young and enthusiasticPakistani journalists who not only understand energy-relatedissues, but also are able to analyseissues outside the realm of high-level policy movements and critical impacts, and contribute to sustainable energy solutions through their reporting. The aim was not to report news but to develop a research-based attitude to reporting on energy, specially through the gender lens,that has critical impact not only on the lives of masses but also has economic and developmental reverberations on the country.

A radio series on importanceof registration of children at birth.It is the fundamental right of a child to get a registration certificate from the place of origin.The denial of this right to legal recognition, feeds into a vicious cycle of rejection and exclusion of a child from other guaranteed rights, protections and benefits. The absence of a birth certificate, in several cases, means the denial of an education and in accessibility to free healthcare, which then come to have a direct bearing on a child’s future economic prospects and the quality of his life. Without proof of age, a child may be denied the minimum protections provided under our law against child labour and, as seen in several cases, against child marriages.Non-registration of births is a problem of lack of awareness and also accessibility which this radio series hopes to address

Of women, for women’ and most importantly ‘by women’ –this is how one can describe this radio programmes launched a day before the International Women’s Day 2011. Featuring the voices of young women from Lyari on issues that are important to their lives –girls’ education, women’s health, pollution, the impact of drug addiction, and early marriages, Lyari’s young women speak out. This dynamic group of 30 young women were trained how to use voice recorders to record interviews, voxpops, oral testimonies and discussions with women, young and old -and a few cooperative men -from their neighbourhood. The young women between 15 –25 years of age,focusedon their local issues in an attempt to bring about behaviouralchanges in the girls, the locality in particular and listeners in general.
